Purpose: To recognize outstanding work in
theory, experiment, or observation in the areas of astrophysics,
nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics, or closely related fields.
Nature: The prize consists of $7,500 and a
certificate citing the contributions made by the recipient.
It will be present annually.
Establishment & Support: This prize was established
in 1996 by contributions from members of the Divisions of Astrophysics
and Nuclear Physics, from corporate, laboratory, university, and
physical society donors, and friends of Hans A. Bethe to honor
him for his outstanding and numerous accomplishments in both astrophysics
and nuclear physics.
Rules and Eligibility: This Award will be made
annually to one individual for outstanding accomplishments in
the areas of astrophysics, nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics,
or closely related fields. It is open to any scientist working
in these areas, worldwide. Nominations are active for 3 years.
No time limits are set on when the work was done. It is helpful
to have several substantive letters of support for a nomination.
Emphasis on the impact of the work is helpful. It is appropriate
to submit material, e.g., publications, in support of a nomination.
Previous winners and their citations are listed here.
Nominations
for the Tom W. Bonner Prize in Nuclear Physics are due on 1
July for the following year's prize.
